Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series (OHSAS) for Chemical Industries
In Singapore, industries are subjected to legislated safety and health management system (SHMS) audit at determined interval. The audit must evaluate the SHMS based on the Workplace Safety & Health Act and its subsidiary legislation, as well SS 506 : Part 1 & SS 506 : Part 3.
SS 506 : Part 3 is a mandatory audit for semiconductor, wafer fabrication plant, oil refinery & petrochemical Plant, chemical manufacturing plant, pharmaceutical plant, bulk storage terminal.
Introduction
The Singapore Standard (SS) on OSH Management Systems, SS 506 consists of the following parts:
- Part 1: Requirements
- Part 2: Guidelines for the implementation of SS506: Part 1
- Part 3: Requirements for the chemical industry
SS 506 Part 3 was developed based on Singapore Standard SS 506 Part 1 – Specification for Occupational Safety & Health (OSH) Management System (A full adoption of OHSAS 18001:2007). It provides a systematic way of managing safety & health in the chemical industry by controlling the Occupational Safety and Health risks and Process Safety through goal setting, planning and measuring of Performance. SS506 : Part 3 enable a single OSH management requirement satisfying both the OHSAS 18001 and the Code of practice as well as audit requirements for certification for the chemical industry.
